Water use efficiency (WUE) of heating systems (i.e., systems that use less energy to achieve the same level of indoor comfort) is an important benefit that could help consumers choose a more energy-efficient heating system. However, previous studies have shown that consumers perceive heating systems as having higher WUE than they actually are. This study examined how consumers' perceptions of WUE in their heating systems influence their energy consumption and energy decision-making behaviors. An online survey was conducted with 90 participants who lived in the state of Arizona and owned a heating system. Energy data from the participants' heating systems were used to compute monthly WUE of their systems. Results of the study indicated that the degree of satisfaction and trust with the water heater was negatively associated with monthly WUE of the system. For consumers who were satisfied and trusted with their water heaters, using a water heater with lower monthly WUE led to greater energy savings. Compared with using a water heater that has a high WUE, using a water heater with a low WUE requires energy consumers to purchase and operate a water heater for a longer period of time. The findings of the study suggest that energy consumers could be motivated to save energy by using a water heater that has a low WUE.James McPartland: Why electric bikes are taking over America Two and a half years ago, I was on a camping trip with my buddies, exploring the back roads of North Carolina. We were driving a mountain bike, and it was the first time I’d ever been on a bike without two wheels. I was pedaling along thinking, “How does this thing go?” Then I hit a hill, and I knew how it went. A moment later, I was airborne. That was my introduction to electric bikes. Bike-packing is part of the culture now, and not everyone is riding bicycles. Plenty of my friends are driving SUVs or even minivans. The bike used to be the elite of the automotive world. Not anymore. Bike-packing is the new trend, and it’s great. You don’t need to be a super-fit person to ride a bike. You don’t need a ton of equipment. You can take your backpack and carry it onto the bike. I was
